Bean, AKA Finley James Whittington, was born by an emergency C-Section (after a long troublesome labour at home) in Mt. Edgecomb Hospital on December 1st, at 12:30 am. He is ridiculously good looking, and takes after both his mother and father. if you would like to see the boy, check out his album on flickr.

Part 2

So before I carry on with the birth story, here is a bit of background information for those of you who don't already know.

The beginning: Finley's birth story, part 1

Two of my closest friends and my cousin are all pregnant. They vary from 13 weeks to 28 weeks to 40 weeks and are all in Joburg, which makes me a little sad because I would love to have seen them during this magical time in their lives. It's also made me the teeniest bit envious and enormously broody. Brad insists that if I remember my pregnancy correctly I would never want to be pregnant again. And he does have a point.

Its Amaymay!

I've been meaning to write down these words for such a long time. I'm forced to keep repeating them in my mind so that I don't forget them, but its time to free up some mental resources and put pen to paper (fingers to keyboard, you know what i mean)!

Dear Finley

Rainy days and Mondays

Winter in Cape Town has arrived and although it may not be especially cold yet, it certainly is very rainy and windy. Fin and I have been exploring this new wet weather and even though he isn't into wearing his Wellington boots, he loves being bundled up, especially in his hat and scarf.

The power of saying no

Most people only learning about the power of saying no much later in their lives, usually when they get tired of being or doing things for other people at the expense of themselves. Our son doesn't have that problem. And neither does Scarlett, his girlfriend. It seems to be a quality that you possess around 17 months where "No!" becomes the most favoured response to any and all questions. Here's a typical extract from our daily conversations:

Me: "Finley do you want some cheese?" (to which the answer used to always be yes)
Fin: "Tseez? No, no no! (shaking head wildly)"

Finley got the vocab

Its always difficult to explain when people ask if Finley is talking, because he is, its just that we seem to be the only ones who understand what he is saying.

A birthday boy (and girl)

Finley and Rupa ignore their birthday cake
We hit a milestone on saturday, Finley turned 1 year. Mandy started the build up with a blow by blow account starting on the 30 November (although, her dedication was not 100%, since she didn't wake me up at 1am). We threw a party out at Alex and Ed's (and Rupa and Jasmin) house, since it is a very beautiful, hand made, cob house, outside of town. Rupa and Finley missed sharing a birth day by a few hours, but Alex and Mandy did share a 1am water breaking (not sure of what the appropriate name is).

Like father, like son

Finley James Whittington after he emptied the bird bath water onto himself at Auntie Leela's. Pic by Kiran Pienaar

Yesterday Amanda and Fin visited Auntie Leela, with Auntie Kiran, and the boy did his usual cute tricks. Mandy said there was a five minute period between when they arrived (and Fin was dressed in a cute button up top), and when he was drenched with water from the newly emptied bird bath, and subsequently naked. We now have a boy in our lives. He hits things with sticks, he loves playing with mud and sand, and expresses sheer delight when he makes a mess.
