ZOMG! BidOrBuy iz offer R300 for ma blogs!

Bidorbuy has offered me The Chance to win Three Hundred South African Rands by blogging about how much I think a car will be auctioned for. I personally think it will be auctioned for One Million South African Rand.

I think it is fun that bidorbuy is trying to use viral marketing to attract more traffic. But, when I see that they are offering (a chance to win) a prize of Three Hundred South African Rands to generate 'buzz' around an auction for a car valued at One Hundred and Twenty Four Thousand, Six Hundred and Seventeen Rand (and Seventy cents) I get a bit indignant. Seriously? You are offering ONE blogger a prize of R300, and expect buzz to follow? THREE HUNDRED RAND?

So, to every one of my readers, far and wide as you may be, please enter this ALLURING competition to win THREE HUNDRED RAND for pimping your blog out to the lowest bidder.

I also decided not to do it, it would just make me feel cheap.

I think you'll find whoring is a better analogy than pimping.

I mean, you are spreading their buzz...

Lets hope that this is the kind of publicity they were aiming for :-)

What should the amount be for the prize such that you would blog about it and not feel cheap?

I guess they actually need to have something people are genuinely excited about. How many people guess the value of coins in a jar at flea markets these days? I haven't seen one of those competitions in ages. I suppose you are either willing or not willing to prostitute your blog readership for money, and if you are then what is a good amount. For me I think if they were talking about R1000 prize it would actually have some merit. I suppose that is arbitrary. I just feel like R300 is not going to entice other people to read my blog and reblog about the competition, because, well, is it worth it? And if you are willing to blog about their competition for a R300 prize, what other acts will you abuse your blog for? Become a link affiliate for every program you possibly can?

Maybe I am just jaded because I probably won't win the prize.

I hope it comes through that I am giving bid-or-buy the link love they want but (omg so gracious) without entering their competition.

I hope this allows me to be critical of the approach, without being seen to deride it's purpose. I am not criticising the competition because I would only enter if it was more money, I am trying to make a point about buying loyalty. If you are going to go into this arena, make it something worth talking about, otherwise you have missed the point of viral/permission marketing and the dialogue that is possible using the internet.

I was going to point out the irony of that, but I suppose it's good I read the comments first and now don't have to.

I agree with you, R300 is NOTHING. I mentioned that and their marketer did contact me and agreed that she would look into increasing the prize's value, because it is a little cheap!

Before I proceed I should disclose that I am from bidorbuy.co.za. Thank you for the feedback. We certainly will look at increasing the prize money although up until now I think less than 5 bloggers have actually partcipated (so your points are very valid). I would like us to increase the prize to at least R1,000 but was hoping to get a few more bloggers to participate first (a bit of a catch 22 I suppose). Anyway, a better than one in five chance is pretty good I think.

Wow, I see they did increase it to R600 bucks, so looks like your post did help out abit! ;-) Maybe I should also join the blogger, R600 is so much, can have a night out with the wife for that wow
