So I wrote about Skype Hype a few days ago. I have been using skype for a bit now to see what it is like. Now, don't get me wrong, I believe skype is crap for being closed, but on the scale of things they are relatively liberal. I have been reading forums on their site, and even pushed for going the open source/standard route. It seems like their audio codec is based on a free standard . They have published their API, to encourage take up, and are even moving to DBUS (from freedesktop.org) for desktop portability. So they are not the worst worst company ever.

Kudos to them for their intelligent approach to making an almost ubiquitous service in a matter of months

That does not mean that I am not unhappy that they have not moved to an even more liberal approach, to capture the OSS straglers, I mean, why not get the best of both worlds. It is not as if they can have market power wrestled from them? they have like a zillion subscribers. And it is not as if their developers are not savvy to the OSS world, I mean their server is running Linux et al. and they use PHPbb
